Premovement time is considered a major contributor to total evacuation time because it encompasses the duration of time that individuals spend preparing to evacuate once an alarm or alert is activated. This phase includes the moments when occupants become aware of the need to leave, make decisions about when to leave, gather their belongings, and potentially communicate with others. Understanding this factor is crucial for fire protection specialists, as effective evacuation strategies and training can significantly reduce premovement time and, subsequently, the total evacuation time.

While other factors such as travel time, reaction time, and escape route length certainly play roles in the overall evacuation process, premovement time is often the most variable and can be influenced by human behavior, the design of the space, and the effectiveness of emergency communication. By focusing on reducing premovement time through training and planning, organizations can enhance the safety and efficiency of evacuation procedures.
